Hober - A Truely Unique Internet Radio Music Experience

Here's a station that's almost impossible to classify: HOBER Thinking Radio, which announces itself as a broadcaster of "unvarnished music for the people of the Internet". Now in its 6th year, I challenge you to find anything else like it on the airways or on the Internet.

While providing a strong dose of original Americana, folk, blues, bluegrass, gospel, celtic and country music, you might also hear something that's native to South America, the Mediteranean, Eastern Europe, Africa, India or the Far East.

You are constantly suprised (usually pleasantly) by what song gets played next. Whether you like it or not, it is always interesting and it exposes you to other artists and styles that you would never otherwise hear or even think to give a listen.

Though eclectic in its range of performances, you will find no heavy metal, commercial rock, pop or rap here. Some of the recordings are live non-studio recordings of individuals or groups made "in the field", including from their "Hober Special Reserve", which you will only hear on Hober. Others may be early performances by blues or jazz pioneers, string bands, gospel or sea shanty singers, music from the Smithsonian collection, a foreign indigenous orchestra, or something that I have absolutley no idea what it is -- it may even be a little weird, but still, it's fascinating.

You occasionally come across this type of music on a public radio special program for an hour or so, but this is 24/7, 365 days a year.

A helpful station feature is the display of the song, artist and disc currently being broadcast and it also has a playlist web page which shows the last ten songs that were played.

The sound quality is very good, transmitting at least 65Kkps in stereo. Other than a few station indentification announcements interspersed among the songs, it is essentially commercial-free. It sustains itself through listener donations and sale of CD's, cottage crafts and publications in it's General Store.

If you want to expand your musical experience, understanding and/or horizons; if you are tired of the narrow programming and monotony of your usual radio stations; then treat yourself to continuous new musical experiences with Hober.
